How to start a trading journal

To start a trading journal that lasts, keep it small and tie it to moments you already have. Before each trade, write the setup, the stop, the target and one line on why now. After the session, record every trade with the net result after charges and tick whether it followed your rules. Once a week, review the week and choose one rule to focus on next. The most important part is timing: a reason written before entry is honest; a reason written after the result is mostly hindsight. A journal that timestamps plans and locks closed days protects you from rewriting your own history.

Three habits that make a journal useful

  1. Plan before entry: setup, stop, target, size and a one-line reason.
  2. Record after the session: entry, exit, net result after charges, rules followed or not.
  3. Review weekly: one lesson, one focus rule, nothing more.

Spreadsheet or app

A spreadsheet is enough to start and costs nothing. Its weakness is that entries can be changed later and nothing reminds you to fill it in. An app can add timestamps, import trades from your broker file, compute charges and flag behaviours automatically. Either way, the habits above matter more than the tool.

Keep it honest

Do not edit old entries. If you learn something later, add a dated note under the original. Record losing trades with the same care as winners, and record the days you broke your rules even if they ended green.

Questions

How long does journaling take each day?

A plan takes under a minute per trade and the daily close a few minutes. Importing trades from a broker file removes most of the typing.

When will I see results from journaling?

Patterns usually show after a few weeks of complete records. Consistency matters more than detail.
